Lossiemouth bore the brunt of high seas battering the Moray coastline at the weekend with both of the town’s beaches subjected to flooding and damage.
The Moray coastal path at the West Beach area was still flooded last night and strewn with boulders and debris. During the height of Saturday’s high tide some golfers were hit hard when they returned to find their cars flooded and stranded on the Moray Golf Club parking area.
Meanwhile dozens of onlookers were attracted to the East Beach where once again waves were being thrown over 30foot into the air as they hit the harbour – with the unprotected hole in the sea wall resulting in the Station Park area once more left under several feet of water.
Temporary repairs were removed from the wall two weeks ago ahead of permanent repairs being undertaken – but the unrelenting nature recent tides has counted out any further work for the time being.
Lossiemouth community councillor Carolle Ralph said that the current state of affairs on the town’s breakwater will be high on the agenda at the next meeting. She said: “We were all reminded once again of the awesome power the sea has along our part of the shoreline.
“The mouth of the River Lossie looks very different right now – of course it is always going to change and so far there has fortunately been no serious damage to property.
“The beach is a huge tourism asset for us and I will certainly be raising the issue at the next meeting of the community council.”
Minor damage was caused to the boat slipway at the West Beach while several vehicles left stranded are thought to have been damaged beyond repair.
Moray Golf Club’s resident professional, John Murray, said: “There was probably half a dozen cars stranded – while three of them received some protection from the sea wall the others were taken away by tow truck.
“I’ve seen water there before but never seen any cars being stuck.”
