POTENTIAL FUTURE ICE skating champions could take their first careful steps on ice in Elgin tomorrow when the Moray Figures Skating Club hold free ‘taster’ sessions.

Running from 5.15pm until 6.15pm on the rink at the Moray Leisure Centre, the sessions are open to children and adults of all ages and abilities – including complete beginners.

Top coaches, skaters and volunteers will be on hand to provide free tuition or simply to hold those taking part upright if necessary!

Club coach Sue Summers-Farrell said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to try out ice skating free of charge. With coaching from top skaters and coaches, the session promises to be great fun.

“We’re a friendly, welcoming and inclusive club with members of all ages and abilities and we’re looking forward to seeing lots of people turning up to have a go. Ice skating is a great way to get fit and have fun as well.”

All equipment, including quality skate hire, will be provided by the club free of charge – participants should, however, dress warmly!

Moray Figure Skating Club is one of the most successful skating clubs in the UK, priding itself on providing skating tuition for raw beginners and leisure skaters of all ages and abilities as well as producing Scottish champions, members of the GB team, international medallists and sportMoray and sportScotland award-winners.

The club’s very existence was in doubt until recently because funding had to be secured for a new refrigeration plant at Moray Leisure Centre’s ice rink.

In the past year the club’s members have won many golds in several competitions all around the UK and in the last two months local youngsters Emily Dale and Ruby Boyd have qualified to take part in the forthcoming British Championships in Sheffield. Emily has also just been made a member of the GB team.

Thirty of the club’s members will be competing on October 14 to October 16 at the Aberdeen National Opens against some of the top skaters from all over the UK.
