TWO YOUNG PEOPLE from Moray are to be given the opportunity to spend some time at a Care Centre in South Africa as a volunteer for two months.

The Elgin Youth Café has linked with the Melkbos Care Centre to create the opportunity in a partnership that began when young people from the Café management group sponsored a child in South Africa six months ago.

That sparked a wish to visit the Melkbos Centre and the young people it provides for. Now fundraising has begun to make it possible for two from the Elgin Youth Café to make the trip – with a ‘Big Quiz’ planned for later this month.

A spokeswoman for the Youth Café told insideMoray: “We hope to build strong educational and cultural ties with the Melkbos Care Centre and would like to support them by sending two young people over to increase their capacity, while at the same time creating a challenging and personal development experience for two of our own young people.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for the two people who are going and is a potentially life changing experience, with great opportunities to develop their own self-esteem and self-confidence.”

The Big Quiz will be held on November 17 at the Inkwell, adjoining the Youth Café, with doors opening at 7pm for a 7.30pm start.

Tickets will be available from Elgin Youth Cafe and are priced at £4 per person – £2 for children under 12 – and that will include entry, quiz and nibbles. Tables can be booked prior to the evening and all proceeds from the quiz will be donated to the South Africa project.
