THE TEAM BEHIND the creation of the Moray Sports Centre were this week given the opportunity to update Scotland’s Sports Minister about their plans.
Kathryn Evans and Sandy Adam from the Moray Sports Foundation, the charity formed to deliver the news centre, joined Moray MSP Richard Lochhead for the meeting with Aileen Campbell MSP at Holyrood.
Mr Lochhead arranged the meeting so that the pair could brief the minister on progress towards establishing the £12million project that aims to produce Moray’s first all-sports all-weather indoor and outdoor centre.
Following the meeting Mr Lochhead said: “Moray is crying out for a state of the art sports centre to boost sports participation and meet local demand with all the health and social benefits that will come with that, and it was great to have the opportunity to discuss that with the Sports Minister.
“Having been involved in the campaign for improved sports facilities locally for a number of years, I am well aware of the excitement around the project and how the development would transform leisure provision in Moray.
“Sandy Adam deserves enormous credit for personally committing his own time and resources to make this project happen.
“The Minister was very supportive and was clearly impressed by the plans presented by Kathryn and Sandy, who have both worked incredibly hard to get the project to this point. At this stage, the good news is that sportscotland have indicated they will offer their support to the Sports Centre and we now just have to wait and see what the scale of that support will be.”
Kathryn Evans welcomed an opportunity to discuss the plans with Ms Campbell, saying: “We’ve been campaigning for funding and with a very ambitious goal of £12 million Aileen Campbell’s support would bring us closer to our target.
“We really appreciate the Minister taking the time to look over our plans and I’m optimistic of the outcome – it would be amazing to have the Sports Minister on board with the cause.
“With this project, we have a great chance to improve sporting facilities in Moray, bring more people to the area and provide a hub that can grow with the local community for years to come.”
