A PUBLIC MEETING being held on Tuesday could decide the future of a crisis-hit Highland League club.

Rothes FC fans were stunned when it was revealed at the start of the month that their club faced a winding-up order over an unpaid tax bill that is reported to be as high as £30,000.

Now supporters are being asked to attend a meeting at the Rothes FC Social Club on Tuesday evening at 7.30pm – with an appeal issued to “anyone with an interest in the future of the club” to attend.

The club managed to get through their opening game of the season with a 3-2 home victory of Fort William in the North of Scotland Cup on Saturday – thanks largely to the generosity of fellow Highland League sides who stepped in to loan players.

Calling on people to back the club at Tuesday’s meeting, the Rothes FC director of football, Mike Mulheron, said that he expected people would be asking how the club got into its current predicament – and how much money is needed to get them out of it.

He said: “People involved will just need to answer, just be honest and get it all out. We have a new team, new sponsor and new strip – so let’s have a new beginning. What happened has happened – let’s look forward and not back.”

Mr Mulheron insisted that the crisis “might actually end up being the best thing that’s happened to the club”, adding that the support Rothes had received from throughout the Highland League was “unbelievable”.
