A MORAY MAN will today begin a nine-month jail sentence after admitting a series of offences committed after being released on bail for driving offences.
Christopher Smith appeared at Elgin Sheriff Court on Thursday where the court was told he had stolen petrol, drove while disqualified and broke into the Dufftown Golf Club.
Smith admitted putting £54.39 worth of petrol into his car at Elgin’s Asda Superstore at 9.30am on April 5 this year and then driving away without paying. The 25-year-old was later identified from CCTV images and police were aware that Smith had been driving while disqualified.
When out on bail Smith was involved in a raid on the golf club in the early hours of April 27 while under the influence of drink and drugs. Hours later the accused and two accomplices were found sleeping in a car surrounded by items including a till receipt from the Golf Club, a golf club and a T-shirt.
Smith was subsequently charged with the theft of these items and £300.
In his defence solicitor Neil McRobert said his client had consumed alcohol and Valium on the night of the break-in which he claimed was the idea of a friend.
