ENTIRE FAMILIES CAN be ‘blown away’ if they head along to the Falconer in Forres this weekend and take the ‘wind turbine challenge’.

Exciting, interactive and free workshops being run by the ‘Hands on Science’ team includes the challenge that will test skills on solar-powered buggies – all part of the Museum’s ‘Festival of Museums’ celebration today and tomorrow.

The workshops, which have been supported by the Berryburn Windfarm Community Fund, are part of the current Power to the People exhibition which will run until the end of October, focussing on the future of energy.

The exhibition already includes hands on energy experiments and interactive displays but a few extra things will be on offer in addition to the workshops. The Wind Turbine challenge is for small teams to build the tallest structures – and then wiring it up to an LED light which they have to place in a house that they make.

For the solar buggy challenge, each team has a solar powered buggy that they have to test and record its ability to travel distances with different levels of power. Only after they have done this recording are they given a target at a distance to land on. The buggy is multi adjustable and the skill is in getting it to go straight and for a set distance.

Anne Owen, Project Development Officer (Heritage and Tourism) at the Falconer Museum said: “It is wonderful to have the fabulous ‘Hands on Science’ team coming to run these interactive workshops.

“It’s going to be an exciting Festival weekend which truly celebrates, the ‘Year of Architecture, Innovation & Design. We look forward to welcoming folk of all ages and encourage everyone to come along and take part.”

“Places on workshops are limited and the Museum ask that people register in advance for a place on 01309 696261 to save disappointment. The Museum will be open throughout the weekend, with loads of hands-on activities too!”
