‘Award-winning charity and social enterprise Outfit Moray is at risk of closing its doors due to significant financial pressures caused by rising costs and reducing fundraising, as a result of the current financial climate.’ That was the press release put out by the Lossiemouth-based charity, which launched their major fundraising and publicity campaign to save them from closure.
Six months later and the outlook is somewhat more settled for Outfit Moray, and they are keen to let everyone know they are most definitely open for business! Their CEO, Tony Brown, says: “Thanks to the very generous support from the people of Moray and the hard work of our staff and volunteers, Outfit Moray is definitely in a much better place that it was 6 months ago.” He goes on to explain that although the charity began this financial year with a small deficit, the Board were confident that last year’s situation could be avoided, as long as the current momentum continued and hopefully, increased.
The charity has several new fundraising initiatives to help provide them with a regular income; a clothing bank outside their property on Shore Street and a monthly lucky number draw which is growing in popularity. They hope to have raised at least £5,000 from their 100km hike and bike event, Cairngorm to Coast, and are holding another abseil at Grampian Furnishers during Seafest on 7 July, as well as a charity art exhibition and auction at Baxters of Fochabers in June.
Community & Corporate Fundraiser, Karen Cox, said, “In the current financial climate, fundraising is always going to be difficult and finding different ways to generate income is a challenge, but it’s been great to have the support of so many people and the local companies who help facilitate our larger events. The kind donation of a week in a holiday cottage enabled us to run an online raffle and raised over £1,200; opportunities like that are incredible and make a huge difference to the young people we support.”
With the growth in fundraising and the receipt of several Grants, including £9,000 from Awards for All, Outfit Moray are confident they can make up the deficit with which they started this year, and be in a far safer position by the time winter returns.
Tony Brown added; “Outfit Moray can provide a range of services for local businesses, such as first aid courses, event first aid cover, team building days, and assistance with becoming a certified cycle-friendly employer. By using Outfit Moray for these services you are not only guaranteeing yourself a first-class service, but you are also helping provide outdoor learning and adventure opportunities for young people across Moray, particularly those who are disadvantaged or vulnerable.”
