A celebration of inspirational women in the Council Chambers

Suffragette colours: green, white and violet, for “give women the vote”

In June, tens of thousands of women gathered in four cities across the UK to take part in PROCESSIONS, a mass-participation artwork to commemorate and celebrate 100 years of women having the vote. After successfully applying to the Scottish Government Centenary Fund, 26 women and girls from all across Moray were able to travel down to Edinburgh to take part in the march.

At the start of the route, each participant was given a scarf in one of the suffragette colours – green, white and violet. When women then took to the streets, the scarves gave the effect of a huge suffragette flag moving through the city. This momentous event was broadcast live on BBC 1 and shared across the world on social media.

Tomorrow evening (Thursday 4 October), Moray women are gathering again. In an event hosted by Councillor Lorna Creswell in the Moray Council Chambers, participants will be able to share their experience of the march, find out about other events that have been happening in Moray to mark the centenary, and hear from Professor Marianne Nicolson and Moray Council Convenor Shona Morrison. There will also be nibbles and light refreshments.

Forres woman Jan MacPherson explains: “When you arrive at the chambers, we will be handing out scarves in the suffragette colours to re-create the atmosphere from the march. We will then invite you to find someone who is wearing the same colour scarf as you, and to spend a few minutes telling each other about a woman who you find inspiring. Your inspirational woman could be anyone from your neighbour to a female relative, teacher or historical figure.”
