Hopes for village hall raised by sale of Speyside’s finest

Fundraising for a Speyside village hall is set to receive a major boost through the sale of a rare 51-year-old example of the region’s most famous produce.

An auction of rare whisky will be held on May 4 as part of the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival with proceeds going towards refurbishment of the Craigellachie Village Hall.

Star lot in the event will be a 1948 Macallan Select Reserve which carries an estimated price tag of £8000.

It will be the second time such an event has been held to raise funds for the hall – during the festival last year a whisky auction raised almost £5000 for the cause.

Hall committee spokeswoman Laura Sievwright said: “We raised £4546 on the day and then received £9092 from the Robertson Trust giving us a total of £13,368.

“Last year’s total really helped us so we now have new lighting in the main hall along with our fire detection system and roof insulation.”

At 200 lots the auction this year is almost double what was available in 2013 – raising hopes that an even greater sum can be raised.

The sale will begin on 2pm with viewing from noon – a catalogue and further details can be found on www.craigellachie.org.uk.
