Speyside hall raises a dram to £16k fund raising effort

A Speyside village hall will owe much needed improvements to Whisky connoisseurs after it raised £16,000 from a special auction at the weekend.

The auction at the Craigellachie Village Hall was organised to coincide with the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival – and that proved to be a smart move with the star attraction, a 51-year-old Macallan Select Reserve, attracting a £6500 price tag.

While that fell a little below its estimated of £8000 organisers were thrilled that their efforts were rewarded after a busy day that attracted bidders from around the world.

Organising committee member Brenda Cooper said: “There were 56 registered buyers in the hall and we had a few pre-auction bids placed.

“We had a great number of people in attendance and that was more than likely due to the ongoing Speyside Whisky Festival, as well as local buyers we had several foreign visitors from Finland, Germany, Japan and France.

“Thanks must go to all the local businesses and volunteers who helped make the day a success – there was a true community spirit surrounding the event and the £16,000 raised will go towards much needed hall improvements.”
