Moray firefighters were called to two serious incidents in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The first saw police and fire services called to a plot of land alongside Troves Industrial Estate in Elgin at 12.45am after a passing motorist spotted cars and a caravan on fire.

When the emergency services arrived they found nobody on the site but two vehicles, an Audi and a Peugeot, and a caravan had been destroyed. Another vehicle had both doors open and a broken windscreen.

Two police officers remained at the site throughout the day while inside the camp seven remaining caravans were empty with two undamaged cars and a van also parked on the site.

Fire crews from Elgin, Lossiemouth, Fochabers and Rothes were meanwhile called to a second blaze at a home in Woodlands Drive, Lhanbryde.

A ladder appliance was also at the scene at 3am to tackle the blaze which is understood to have been caused by an electrical fault – a woman was in the house at the time but escaped unhurt. There is not thought to have been any connection between the two fires.

The top floor of the Lhanbryde home was completely gutted by the fire while the ground floor subsequently suffered serious water damage.
