Moray school’s 80-day sea adventure draws to a close

Pupils at Gordonstoun were celebrating this weekend after completing their ambitious voyage around the coast of the UK in just 80 days.

Around 100 pupils and faculty members were involved in taking the School’s 80-foot yacht “The Ocean Spirit of Moray” on the journey this summer to mark the 80th anniversary of the school.

Pupils took turns in crewing the yacht over ten legs with the final journey ending in Plockton on Sunday.

Describing his leg of the journey from Portsmouth to Bristol, Billy Forsyth said: “It took us 12 days and, literally, we had plain sailing for the most of it.

“The weather was wonderful, the wind was great, and nothing went wrong. We went out with a really good group of teachers and pupils who I did not know from different year groups and teachers who had not taught me before – and it was really good to get to know them.”

All pupils at the school attend a programme of seamanship as part of their curriculum, with the Ocean Spirit of Moray taking part in tall ship events throughout the summer.
