Fifer walks off with the world’s finest Cullen Skink

Porridge champ Neal Robertson added Cullen Skink to his titles

A Fifer has walked away with the title of producer of the world’s finest bowl of Cullen Skink.

Neal Robertson was a pre-competition favourite at the annual championships held on Sunday at the Cullen Bay Hotel – and duly walked away with the title.

The Auchtermuchty tea-room owner has already held world titles for his porridge, stovies and jam-making skills but can now boast of serving the finest Cullen Skink on the planet at his Tannochbrae premises.

He told the P&J: “It’s all about celebrating local food from local producers – these competitions are great, you come across all sorts of interesting people who are passionate about food.”

A second title was introduced to the championships this year, Cullen Skin ‘with a twist’ – and that remained local with the Cullen Bay Hotel’s Ian Watson taking the title with a rum-smoked version of the dish.

Vice-chair of the Cullen Voluntary Tourist Initiative, Simon Tucker, praised the hotel for its organisation of the event: “It’s all a bit of fun and everyone seems to have enjoyed themselves.

“We would like to thank the Cullen Bay Hotel for hosting us – the judges, competitors, visitors and volunteers – and for making this happen. We can only hope to get bigger and better each year.”
