Police seek public help over ‘wilful’ fire at Forres shop

Police are appealing to the public for information on two fires that struck at a Moray chip shop last week which investigators believe were caused by wilful fire raising.

The blaze at the Bervie Chipper on the A96 just outside Forres on Wednesday, April 8 at around 4.45pm sparked a joint Police and Scottish Fire and Rescue Service investigation at the scene.

Just 24 hours later the building was hit by a second fire at almost exactly the same time – in both cases a passing member of the public reported the fires.

In a statement released on Tuesday a spokesman for Police Scotland said: “We are appealing for information following the two fires at the Bervie Chipper on the Nairn Road, Forres.

“The incidents happened at around 5pm on Wednesday 8 and 4.45pm on Thursday 9 April. A joint Police and Fire investigation has been conducted and the fires are now being treated as wilful.

“Anyone who may have witnessed anything suspicious in the area or who has information is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 if you wish to remain anonymous.”
