A BUCKIE MAN showed police drugs valued at around £700 when they called at his home on an unrelated issue, Elgin Sheriff Court heard this week.
20-year-old Gary Welford showed officers a quantity of cannabis at his East Church Street home on June 20 last year after police detected a strong smell of the class B drug.
Police were invited into the house by Welford when they called on a separate matter, the officers spotting drug paraphernalia before Welford showed them where the drugs were.
Defence spokesman Matthew O’Neill told the court that his client had been quite frank with the social work department regarding his use of cannabis, adding that he had used the drug since he was 14.
He further admitted purchasing the drug in large amounts so that he could pass it on to friends in the local area.
After hearing that Welford had recently obtained work as a roofer, Sheriff Peter Grant-Hutchison ordered him to undertake 150 hours of unpaid work over the next six months as an alternative to imprisonment.
