THE FORMER ELGIN Academy teacher who was found guilty by a jury last month of engaging in sexual activity with an under-age pupil has been jailed for two years.
Jonathan Wylie, 33, appeared for sentence on Monday at Elgin Sheriff Court where his offences were described by Sheriff Olga Pasportnikov as “planned and predatory behaviour”.
Wylie was arrested in 2013 after he sent a number of messages on Facebook to the girl between September and November that year. The jury found him guilty of engaging in sexual activity with, or directed towards, a teenage pupil.
The court had heard that police had investigated Wylie’s internet activities and that revealed searches for young girls.
He was also found guilty of intentionally sending written sexual communications to the same pupil and of asking her to supply explicit photographs, and of a third charge that he took or permitted the taking of indecent photographs or pseudo-photographs of a child.
Despite the guilty verdict Wylie continued to plead his innocence through his defence advocate when he appeared for sentencing.
Wylie lived in Elgin at the time of the offences but has since moved to Maryburgh in Ross-shire.
Sheriff Pasportnikov passed a two-year jail sentence and ordered a further 24-months be served under licence.
