A MAJOR SEARCH throughout Moray and Speyside for a missing woman ended in tragedy when a body was found on the River Spey.
The Buckie Lifeboat joined police and coastguard teams from Burghead, Portsoy, Buckie and Lossiemouth in the search at the mouth of the River yesterday.
A spokesman for the Buckie Lifeboat said: “Buckie lifeboat launched to search around the mouth of the river Spey for a missing person at 13.20 today [Sunday]. The lifeboat was stood down at 15.30 after the casualty was found up river. Our thoughts are with the family.”
Earlier police had issued an appeal as they sought to locate Katherine McLeod, 60, who went missing from Grantown. Sadly, the search was called off on Sunday afternoon when a body was found in the Grantown area.
A police spokesman said: “The body is still to be formally identified but the family of Ms McLeod have been made aware. The death is being treated as unexplained and, as with all sudden deaths, a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.”
Ms MacLeod is understood to be the wife of Billy McLeod, who was a director of the Grantown firm McLeod Building which went into liquidation earlier this year.
