Burghead’s Boxing Day Swim postponed in face of high winds

Burghead Swim – delay this year.

HIGH BOXING DAY winds that are predicted to become even worse as the day continues has caused the postponement of one of Moray’s biggest seasonal attractions.

The Boxing Day Swim at Burghead harbour has been cancelled – although organisers hope to be able to go ahead on Hogmanay instead.

A statement this morning from Jamie Campbell, president of the organising committee, said: “The severe weather conditions at the moment and those forecast for later today made it impossible for us to go ahead with the swim today.

“We have decided it safer to postpone the event and apologise for any disruption this might cause to those planning to take part and of course the many spectators who traditionally turn out, but safety must come before all else.

“We intend to hold the swim this year on Hogmanay at the same time – 2pm – and look forward to seeing everyone then.”

The event has been held annually for the last 30 years with proceeds being donated to local charity groups – benefitting this year will be Logans Fund, the Ladybird Group, Burghead Hall and the Elgin & District Pipe Band.
