Free training offer for groups wishing to set up Men’s Shed

THE DAYS WHEN sheds were simple structures for storing tools and gardening equipment are long gone – and now a national organisation is out to prove the point.

Scottish Men’s Sheds are organising a ‘training day’ for development workers in any sector, but in particular council, third sector, housing associations and volunteer groups, who would benefit from how to support local groups who set up a ‘Men’s Shed’.

In Moray there are already two such groups – one based in Fochabers and the other in Forres, while a third in Keith is currently being developed. The region is also set to host Jason Schroeder from Scottish Men’s Shed at the Elgin Town Hall on January 26.

Jason has developed the one-day training course that will be useful for those who wish to develop either new or existing groups.

A spokesman said: “By attending the participants will learn about the process successfully created and being implemented across Scotland by the Scottish Men’s Sheds Association (SMSA).

“A wide range of topics will be discussed including the Men’s Sheds ethos, community empowerment, approved OSCR Men’s Shed constitutions, charity status, male engagement and support strategies.

“It will also include inter-agency and partner support initiatives and finding your place in the exciting journey taking place throughout Scotland of creating our own grass roots Men’s Shed Movement.”

The aim of the training is for empowering participants to have an in-depth knowledge of the Scottish Men’s Sheds developmental processes – and feel capable of being able to support and guide local groups by implementing the SMSA’s methodology to achieve successful outcomes.

The spokesman added: “Anyone who wishes to attend this Scottish Government funded training event can do so by booking online through this link.”

The January 26 event will run from 10am until 3pm with refreshments and a light lunch provided.
