Woman is charged with setting her own home alight

POLICE HAVE CHARGED a Moray woman of deliberately setting fire to her own home close to the village of Portgordon on Sunday.

Emergency Services rushed to the blaze at around 4.30am on Sunday morning at Enzie, on the road between Buckie and Fochabers. By the time they arrived the house was already well ablaze – thankfully, nobody was injured.

However, the owner of the bungalow, Carol Stewart, 56, appeared at Elgin Sheriff Court on Monday charged with wilful fireraising and behaving in a threatening and abusive manner.

A police spokeswoman said: “We can confirm that a 56-year-old woman has been charged in connection with an alleged wilful fireraising in the Bin View Terrace area of Portgordon on Sunday.”

Stewart made no plea or declaration when she appeared on petition at Elgin Sheriff Court and was released on bail. She is expected to reappear within seven days.
