Moray Concert Brass plan to bring summer early to Elgin with a fantastic festival of brass music, in June, to suit all tastes. From smooth jazz and sultry swing to pop and rock, Moray will be alive with music to get the feet tapping as two of Britain’s foremost brass players, and an up and coming jazz orchestra join MCB for a series of concerts that are not to be missed.
The weekend extravaganza kicks off in Elgin Town Hall on Friday 8 June when Moray Concert Brass perform some classic pop and rock tunes in their own inimitable style. From the Beatles classic Hey Jude to Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody via Robbie Williams’ Let me Entertain You there will be something for all ages.
The Gala concert, also in Elgin Town Hall, on Saturday 9 June has a fantastic line-up of special guests providing a wonderful evening of jazz and swing music. British Jazz Trumpet and flugel horn player Bruce Adams has won the prestigious Top Trumpet prize at the British Jazz Awards on three occasions and is a regular guest soloist across Europe, making regular appearances at jazz festivals in Glasgow and Edinburgh and further afield in Cork, Sacramento and British Colombia. Joining him on stage will be Gordon Campbell who is considered one of the country’s foremost trombone players and is lead trombone for both the BBC Big Band and the John Wilson Orchestra. During a distinguished career he has worked with a host of international stars including Ella Fitzgerald, Barbara Streisand and Robbie Williams.
The , a big band featuring some of the UK’s leading young jazz musicians, make a return visit. They are old friends of Moray, having had a series of successful and popular concerts in Elgin; the most recent Let’s be Frank last July and their sell out two night Let it Snow event in December.
Friday and Saturday’s concerts will be relaxed affairs with tables and chairs downstairs and a small dance floor for those who are feeling the rhythm, while the upstairs of the hall will have a more traditional concert feel. Soft drinks will be available to purchase or people are welcome to bring their own bottle if they want to get into the party mood.
Sunday sees the spotlight move to St Giles Church, where festival organiser, and well-known local musician, Glenn Munro, will be in concert, with “a little help from his friends” performing a fantastic collection of easy listening tunes including Gonna Fly Now and Angels; a perfect way to end a weekend! This concert is in aid of Pseudomyxoma Survivor charity and Ward C2 of Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital. These are causes close to Mr Munro’s heart as he was himself diagnosed with Pseudomyxoma, a rare cancer that often starts in the appendix, and had highly specialised treatment and operation in August last year. The concert will be recorded live and a CD produced that will hopefully raise even more money for these worthwhile causes.
“We have been very lucky to have such fantastic musicians, young and old in Moray and to hear them play with performers of the callable of Gordon and Bruce should really be something special’ said Mr Munro. “To have this opportunity right on our doorstep is something not to be missed.”
