Moray Council granted planning consent for four covered tennis courts to be built next to the new Moray Sports Centre at the MSC Linkwood Road site, which is currently under construction and due for completion in 2019.
The application supports the MSC expression of interest previously submitted to ‘The Transforming Scottish Indoor Tennis Fund.’ The fund offering two thirds of the total cost of the construction requires planning confirmation to progress with stage 2. Tennis Scotland, sportscotland and Lawn Tennis Association’s launched their commitment to investing £15 million into covered Tennis courts across Scotland in December 2016.
If funding is successful MSC could become the regional Tennis Centre in the North. Giving people the ability to play tennis year-round, a regional Tennis Centre could bring top level coaches to the area to give expert advice to players of all abilities and reduce the expectation to travel south to have access to indoor courts.
Kathryn Evans, Chief Executive of MSC said, “This is an exciting opportunity to increase the provision of much needed sports facilities in the Moray area. Our ambition is to be the first completed project from this fund in Scotland. It would be a huge benefit to all tennis players to have year-round access, not only now but for the future 20-50 years!”
With Wimbledon just around the corner, MSC hopes to engage with people when Tennis is on everyone’s mind. Kathryn urged, “We need our community to buy in to the centre and courts to make it a success. To achieve all the things that Moray is lacking in a sporting capacity, we need groups, clubs and individuals to support us by donation, sponsorship or volunteering.”
