Call to make the 13th Elgin Marafun the luckiest of them all

Rotary gear up for Marafun 2015

People in Moray of all ages are being encouraged to join in the growing popularity of a fun race through Elgin on behalf of their favourite charities.

The Elgin Rotary Club’s 13th biennial Marafun is set for June and as usual is proving popular with sports clubs and fitness groups – however, the organisers are stressing that the event is every bit as important for individuals simply seeking to raise funds.

Teams of five are being invited to compete on the adult street relay on Saturday, June 7 with each team member expected to run a total of just over five miles around Elgin town centre.

There is a selection of categories in the Marafun for men, women and mixed, as well as for fun runners, sports clubs and service teams from such as the RAF and emergency services.

Speaking on behalf of the organising committee, Jim Walker said: “I want people to get their trainers on and get involved – we are particularly keen to try to make this summer’s race more fund and we will have special prizes for best fancy dress.

“At this time of year I think a lot of people who had new year resolutions to get fit may feel their resolve is dimming – so now is the time to dust off their running kit.”

The Marafun has raised around £650,000 for local charities since it first took place in 1991.
