A Moray coastal community is gearing up to celebrate the 70th anniversary of VE day with a special service and concert of music from the era.
Portgordon will host a special service in the village square next month when the area will be decorated with “messages of hope, joy and fond memories of loved ones”.
The “Light and Bright” service will be held in the square at 7pm on Friday, May 8 – and will be followed 24 hours later by an anniversary concert in the village hall featuring Mario Janetta & the Big Band Sound.
It is hoped that the events will help raise funding for Erskine care homes – and organisers this week revealed that their advance efforts are already bearing fruit, with volunteers raising almost £200 from a collection at the Buckie branch of Tesco.
‘Portgordon Post’ treasurer Sonia Lawrence said: “It was a rather chilly day but a lot of fun and the result makes you warm! We would like to thank the volunteers who donated their time to stand outside the Tesco store in Buckie and to all the members of the public who donated.”
Details on the anniversary events on May 8 and May 9 can be found on the Portgordon Post Facebook Page or ticket information for the village hall event can be obtained by email to portgordon-post@hotmail.com.
