Moray youth coach facing historic sex charges

A YOUTH FOOTBALL COACH with connections at several club and school youth teams in the region is facing charges relating to historic sex offences.

It has been revealed that Robbie Russell, 66, has been bailed on two charges of indecent assault involving a minor in the early 80s.

Mr Russell is understood to have had coaching connections with at least one school team and Elgin Boys Club, where he held coaching and senior team management roles.

He has also assisted at Highland League side Lossiemouth FC, although a club spokesman said he only ‘lined the pitches’ there and did not hold any official role.  He had also worked as a swimming instructor and lifeguard in Moray, employed at Elgin’s Munro Baths for over 40 years until he retired in 2010.

Police confirmed that Russell, who is originally from Lerwick but now lives in Elgin, was bailed after making an appearance at Inverness Sheriff Court in May. Police Scotland said: “A 66-year-old man was arrested on April 26 in connection with sexual offences.”
