THE 55-YEAR-OLD MAN who was arrested and charged in connection with an alleged assault in Elgin has appeared in court and remanded in custody.
Jon Craig is accused of assault to severe injury, permanent impairment, danger to life and attempted murder.
He is also facing additional charges relating to vandalism and behaving in a threatening and abusive manner. He made no plea when he appeared in private at Elgin Sheriff Court on Friday.
The more serious charges relate to an alleged attack on a 44-year-old woman who was discovered on the ground in the Woodside Terrace area of Elgin in the early hours of October 26. That sparked a major operation by police as the woman lay seriously injured at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, where she remains.
It is believed the woman is originally from Poland and was on her way to catch a bus to work at the time of the incident. Police described their investigations as “extremely complex”, and including halting several motorists a week after the incident and searches in the nearby River Lossie.
The investigation was further hampered as police had been unable to speak to the injured woman.
